A Hard Day
Today was an emotionally draining day for Richard & I. Why? Taking the calves & Douglas to the Sale Barn went completely against the grain. Why so bad you ask when you sell so many animals each year? Today was very different. Normally when we sell animals we know who we are selling to & that the animals are headed to good homes. Today, who they were sold to was completely out of our hands. Douglas was the hardest. He is such a sweet boy & we would hate to see him turned into a “mean” animal due to mishandling. Most folks are afraid of bulls & rightly so in many cases but not with Douglas. The calves sold relatively early in the sale but then we had to wait ages for Douglas to come through. He made a good price & Richard spoke to the buyer so all we can hope is that he will do well and have a good life.
Sound too sentimental? No apologies here. We fully understand that an animal is just that, an animal but their quality of life is important. Yes we butcher our own meat & eat well on it but we also know that the animals have had a good life from beginning to end.
Life moves on though as we have many many more animals to see roll out of here in the next few weeks. The mature pigs start leaving here on Saturday.
Richard & I are already not sleeping well & we haven’t even started physically moving yet! There is SO much going on. Richard can’t go to sleep at night as his mind is buzzing, I wake up early in the morning with my mind buzzing! What a pair! We will make it through though 🙂
Take care,
Liz
