Happy cows :)
Now that the grass is growing again we are trying to move the four big cows (Douglas, Lady Longlashes, Duchess & Millie) to new pasture every 3-4 days so as to allow the grass some time to recover in the rest time. I know it is not perfect, every day would be better with a rest period of 28 days but we only have four cow pastures right now & to divide them up even smaller would require us having to buy more temporary fence posts & electric wire as there is only the one pond on the section divided into thirds which has to service them at all times. On the fourth pasture we have to physically fill up a water trough for them.
This evening after milking we moved them to some fresh grass. This pasture was actually the one worse hit by the drought as it was the one we left them in whilst feeding hay but it is recovering. Douglas belted & pranced like a puppy all the way across the yard!
We can halter the rest of the cows but don’t with him. Probably could though just don’t want him too friendly.
Lady & Duchess were soon tucking in:
So nice to look out over the fields & see green. As you can see Millie was a little further off but still enjoying some fresh greens 🙂
With only four big cows to manage now things are certainly much easier & the fact that we are not feeding hay right now is even better. Of course we are not naive enough to think that the grass will last all winter but would love for it to continue growing for a while longer yet. No frosts please!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend,
Liz
