Sausage is now sausage!
LOL! You didn’t know that did you?! Sausage is now sausage! Hah! What am I talking about?! Once in a very rare while we will get a pig that decides that the electric fencing is fine to walk through even though they are getting shocked. If it is a breeder we will retrain it by putting it in a confined area with many rows of electric wire so that it cannot get out. After a couple days we will let it out & watch to see if it behaves. It normally does & life goes back to normal. When a feeder pig is naughty it gets made into sausage a little quicker than planned. Two weeks ago, Sausage decided that she was going to go through the Polywire at breakfast time each morning. No big deal as she was still behind the Hi-Tensile. However then she decided that she could walk through the Hi-Tensile & come out to see us each morning. NOT good! Although not nasty she was pushy which can quickly become dangerous. By last Sunday morning she had become a real pain & Caleb was absolutely terrified as she was a very noisy pig & of course he was beside me when she came yelling for her food. (The kids go out amongst the pigs all the time & will sit down beside them but not at breakfast time!) SO Sausage got to roam the yard on Sunday & then on Monday morning the deed was done.
This afternoon Michelle & I made Sausage into sausage. She was only about 125lbs so not a big pig. I couldn’t be bothered to deal with the small amount of bacon so just cut & wrapped the four legs for roasts & the rest we made into sausage. Whilst we were doing that Richard was trying to knock himself out in the pond! He had gone down to move the posts in further to give the pigs more water. On the last post the mud was really deep so he was leaning over. The T-Post hit a rock & somehow rebounded, hitting him in the face! Daniel & Hannah had been down there playing in the mud & so had hosed themselves off before coming in the house. Daniel said that “Daddy” had hit himself in the nose but was alright. A few minutes later Richard walks in with a swollen nose & black eye! After a few minutes of discussing what had happened I asked him if he had been wearing sunglasses. He said “yes” so I then asked if they were broken. It was then he realized that he no longer had his sunglasses. He was SO dazed when it happened that he had not noticed that they had fallen off his nose. When we went back out later he took a rake & dredged the pond where he had been hit. Sure enough there were his sunglasses:
Yes look how bent they are. He was a little upset as these were a very expensive pair of sunglasses but a lot cheaper than his eye! Without those glasses on he could really have done some damage to himself!
Remember the pics of the Daisy girls I shared yesterday? Well Donna farrowed nine piglets this afternoon (7 gilts & 2 boars already ear notched) & Diana was on number 3 when we came in this evening. Fancy them both farrowing on the same day! We will count & ear notch Diana’s tomorrow morning. Donna farrowed in the chicken coop & Diana is in the barn.
Take care,
Liz
