Easter at Niagara Falls
After getting absolutely soaked on Friday walking dogs & unloading horses etc, Michelle & I were very happy to see the sun peaking through on Saturday.
Saturday morning saw us in Canaseraga, NY delivering some of our piglets. From there we were to drive up to Lockport, NY but on the way we stopped at Stoney Brook State Park near Dansville. What a great place! Well worth a visit if you are passing through. Due to all the storms we have had in MO I am not able to access my home computer so cannot show you any pics right now – will do another posting when I am home. After the park we did go up to Lockport where we picked up 7 Gloucestershire Old Spot piglets – 4 for us & 3 for others. If you recall the GOS come in 4 color groups – red, blue, green & black. Black are the rarest & we have been waiting nearly a year to get them. Now have 2 new boars & 2 gilts.
From Lockport we went to Niagara Falls where we spent the rest of the weekend 🙂 We stayed in the Holiday Inn – it was the last room they had! Kids, of course, wanted to swim. The pool was frigid! Didn’t stay in very long before gravitating to the hot tub! Sunday morning we found a church to go to in walking distance. Those of you who have been to Niagara will know that it is no place to be driving a long rig around! After church we went to get something to eat. Now I do not mind paying good money for quality food but I really object to being ripped off for junk food. We had had an excellent breakfast in the hotel – all you could eat buffet so were not all that hungry. We walked to the International Food Court – what a rip off. They wanted $6.95 for a hot dog & fries. We gave that a miss, came back to the truck & made sandwiches. From there we walked to Goat Island all the way round, went down the elevator to the Bridal & American Falls & then on over to the Observation Deck. We walked a long way that day. It started off dull but then the sun came out. The last place we visited was the Visitor’s Center where we watched the Niagara Legends of Adventure movie on the big screen which the kids loved. Came back & ate in the hotel before swimming once again & calling it quits for the night. I will share pics once I get home.
Monday morning, we headed south into Ohio – pouring with rain again. Dropped one piglet off & picked up another in Jefferson, then moved on to Oberlin to pick up a horse named Taxi. From there we went to Frazeyburg to drop off another piglet before heading to just south of Cincinatti for the night.
Today was another interesting driving experience. Taxi needed to go to a farm just outside of Lexington, KY. Beautiful countryside but oh what a road! I had to turn left up a gravel road. Any turn I make has to be wide in order to get around. Well this one was narrow with a 4′ tree stump on the corner & I couldn’t drive over the very nice manicured lawn on the opposite side! SO I had to go back & forward a couple times until I was able to skim past the tree. Then we started up the gravel road, which once again, should not be classed as a road! It was mostly just the width of the trailer so thankfully we did not meet anyone. This time though it was trees both sides, not a drop like in Missoula, MT. At one point the road did a ‘Y’ & we needed to go right. Unfortunately in the middle of the Y was a big “hump” (grass bank) so I couldn’t go wide. What’s your problem you ask! LOL! Well there was a tree on the left preventing me from doing the turn. This time I thought I was going to have to walk & go get a chainsaw BUT after several maneuvers I finally got through & was able to make the delivery. Phew! Coming back was not so bad & we were soon on our way. The rain was pouring down so although we wanted to stop for lunch had to drive a while until the rain stopped. I honestly have no clue what town we stopped in but there was a Panera Bread there which caught our attention. As you well know I am not a lover of junk food. After trreating the kids to Burger King yesterday I was ready for some decent food. Not too keen on Panera’s sandwiches but do like their soups & smoothies so that is what we had. The parking places were small & full but thankfully there was an old Home Depot behind a ways where we could park & walk. We had just reloaded everyone back into the truck after lunch& started back on the road when the heavens opened again – talk about perfect timing. God was watching out for us as we would have got drenched.
Tonight we are in O’Fallon, MO, just west of St Louis. Could actually see some of the Tornado damage from I70 as we drove by. We have had a nice swim & now the kids are all in bed. Tomorrow we go to Kansas City to meet Richard & switch trucks. From there we head home, delivering 2 more pigs on our way. Looking forward to being in my hubby’s arms again – we do miss each other when we are apart for these trips.
Hope all is well with you & that you are having a great week.
