LOL! Watch out for hot ashes!
Once the cold weather hits, the routine here is that we empty the hot ashes from the wood stove into the ash pan situated below the wood stove each evening. (If you do not empty the ash regularly it builds up and you end up with it overflowing out the door and also preventing you from putting in as much wood as you like.) The following morning that pan, which theoretically is now cooler with any coals that were ‘alive’ now dead, is emptied out onto the garden patch.
Yesterday morning, Richard emptied the pan around 9:30am. As usual, we never thought any more about it. That is, until I looked out the window about 2 hours later and saw smoke. At first I thought it was dust from someone going down the road but then realized it was not brown and also a little closer to home! OOPS! Time to get the hose out. It actually did us a favor in that it burned down some of the grass in one of the raised beds but of course, it was a good job we were here to catch it!
It got to 11F here last night which is a little colder than normal for this time of year! I know many of you already have snow so stay safe and warm.
Take care,
Liz
