MT – Day 4 – Evans Plunge, Hot Springs, SD
2 photos in this post.
First built in 1890, Evans Plunge is certainly a unique place! It is the world’s largest natural warm water indoor swimming pool with the temperature consistently at 87 degrees Fahrenheit year-round! 5,000 gallons of water flow from the mineral springs every hour, coming up through the “vents” in the pool’s bottom. If you go expecting a regular pool you are going to be disappointed. Most of this pool’s bottom is covered in smooth pebbles like a river. The water is completely refreshed every 1 1/2 hours due to the spring.
It was SO nice to swim a pool that was not full of chemicals! At one end there is a set of rings going across the pool that you have to swing on to get from one side to the other. Daniel managed to do the first two. Hannah and him tried repeatedly to get all the way across so the next morning they were aching!
Important to note that there is an outdoor pool with slides which is chlorinated. There are also two hot tubs, a sauna and health club which is all inclusive in the price.
Evans Plunge is NOT cheap BUT if you go for the last two hours of the day, admission is half-price. That is what we did and at the time of writing this review, the cost for the 5 of us was $31. The lockers are 50c, one time use.
Definitely worth a visit. Thursday was definitely a BUSY day but a thoroughly enjoyable one. Time we got back to Peidmont it was dark.
Take care,
Liz
